14 Mar People That Inspire Us: TMV

Working with inspiring people is a top priority for us at VDK Capital. Internally, we have constructed a team that places great emphasis on and believes in impactful pursuits, and the purpose-driven people we work with in our broader ecosystem are also chosen judiciously using the same criteria.

We are inspired by our good friends at TMV every day, which is led by the firm’s amazing founders, Soraya Darabi and Marina Hadjipateras. These two women came together and built TMV based upon a simple premise — namely, that investing in purposeful companies is good business. The firm caters to a different kind of investor, and also prioritises mentoring entrepreneurs who share TMV’s ethos. Additionally, diversity is central to the firm’s approach.

VDK first made contact with soraya and Marina Hadjipateras in early 2020. They had just launched their second fund and shared their passion and commitment to continue investing (as in their first Fund) in early stage, visionary founders who are building businesses beyond the bottom line. We were really inspired by their conviction in focusing on impactful, purpose-driven sectors, including the care economy, financial inclusion and sustainability (amongst others). We were determined to work closely with them.

In January, TMV announced their oversubscribed second fund of $64m, which was 6x the size of their first fund. We are honoured and proud of the role VDK Capital played in helping TMV realise this success. Our efforts included numerous online Zoom calls to introduce many of our friends to TMV, some one-on-one meetings when COVID-19 travel restrictions were relaxed, and fireside events with friends and family. During this process, we at VDK learned so much and became even more closely engaged with TMV. We look forward to more of the same this year, and as Soraya and Marina often say, “onwards and upwards!”
